Video Game Ruminations

This is the end of Kingdoms of Amalur . . .

38 Studios, the creators of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, have laid off their entire staff.  While I am not going to go into the specifics of what happened (read here for more details), I find myself saddened by this.  As a gamer, I very much liked KoA:R, and was looking forward to a sequel.  If you have read this blog since it’s inception, I have been a huge supported of KoA.  While I did have a few problems with the game, I did enjoy it a lot and was waiting with bated breath for info on the sequel.

IGN is reporting that they were actually working on an Amalur MMO and Amalur 2 before the closing and layoffs.  While I am sure it will not happen, lets all hope that this mess can be sorted out and they can get back to work on the sequels.

Lets all send out good vibes to the people who have been laid off or have lost their jobs.  Having been unemployed for a year and a half (I am back to work now), I know how horribly a job loss can affect a family and way of life.  So, lets send those vibes, and hopefully the good folks who gave us Amalur will know we are thinking of them.

  1. Shame it came to this since it was a promising start from a new IP.
Looks like Epic picked up some of the staff, though. Not sure what will happen to the IP. After I finish the Witcher I think I’m going to open my copy up.

    • Yeah, I was a bit saddened by the news. Sure, Amalur had some problems, but it was a very enjoyable game. I think the sequel would have been phenomenal.

I did see that Epic picked up some of the guys. I hope they picked up the Amalur rights as well to let them continue. Haven’t seen if that’s the case yet or not, though. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.

How is The Witcher? I have it, but haven’t started it yet. Been trying to get through Mass Effect 3.
